Wall Lantern Hooks For My Entryway - DIY

I struggle with decorating my front entryway.  I move furniture and wall decor into and out of it on a seasonal basis and am never entirely happy with the end result.  After the most recent move of furniture I decided that I wanted lanterns or sconces to flank a painting that was hung above our antique church pew.

Re-Upholstering A Tufted Ottoman

I was super excited when I was given two tufted ottomans by a family member. They were in her Goodwill pile and when I spotted them I knew that I had to at least try to bring them back to life.  So without knowing at all what I was doing, I set my mind to re-upholstering and changing the overall look of them by exposing more wood and only upholstering the top portion.

Refinishing A Buffet - Rescuing A Piece of Furniture

For those of you that follow the blog and don't sew, you are probably getting bored with my most recent posts.  So here is a down and dirty DIY project for those who like to get their hands dirty.  It required stripping off layers and layers of paint, a little woodworking to add a bottom and some feet, sanding, staining and new hardware.  After a few days of laboring over this piece of furniture during Eliana's nap times I was able to rescue the white buffet below and transform it into a rustic but "I Love It" stained buffet:

Sewing A Princess Anna {From Frozen} Summer Dress

This was the final dress that I sewed for Eliana prior to our trip to Disney and it is my favorite!  I have been saving this post because I have been so excited with how the dress turned out and wanted to find the perfect photos to capture it.  I am not sure I could capture how much I love this dress in a picture because I partly love it due to Eliana's reaction while wearing it.  She twirled (above photos) through Epcot wearing this dress and beamed every time someone said "Hello Princess Anna".  She then wore it the next morning when we made our final trip into Magic Kingdom and met Princess Anna in person!  We had so many people stop us and ask about the dress (more than any of her other princess dresses, which also made me beam a bit too).

Sewing A Queen Elsa Dress-Up Dress {From Frozen}

This Elsa dress was one of Eliana's favorites while at Disney.  I liked it too because while it was a Queen Elsa dress, it was still comfortable enough to be worn in the Florida heat (90's and humid).

This dress was one of the most difficult for me to envision.  I wanted a dress that was made of lightweight cotton fabric with very little adornments but I needed it to also look like an Elsa dress (which is pretty elaborate).  Most Elsa dress-up dresses have long sleeves and/or very long capes - check out the Elsa dress in the background of the photo below:

Disney Tips and Tricks - Disney World with a Toddler

Our trip to Disney was fabulous. To say that it was magical feels cliche...but it was! Eliana's fantasies became alive in front of our eyes and we enjoyed every second of it! While we enjoy rotating our vacation spots because of the educational and cultural values it provides to children (and adults) we can understand why some families choose to vacation at Disney every year - they make it so easy! Everyone has fun and you feel spoiled and enchanted while on their property. We will most definitely return in the future!  Their were some questions that I asked myself prior to our vacation and I feel like I can better answer them now that we have spent a week at Disney with a toddler:

Stroller: Bring your own or rent a Disney stroller?

Disney Days 3 & 4

The last couple days have been filled with trying out some other parks including Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach and Hollywood Studios. We also re-visited Magic Kingdom in the evening for the parades, light up show on the castle and fireworks. While we have enjoyed the other parks, Jonathan and I both agree that there is nothing like Magic Kingdom - especially for a 2 year old and that 2 year old's parents! We love watching the awe in her face as princesses she has fantasized about come to life. Her face lights up with excitement everytime she sees Minnie, Daisy, Cinderella (or any other princess), music and dancing. So after waking up and getting a morning swim in (one of the joy's of staying at a hotel with a pool - you can go during "in-between" times) we started Day 3.

Disney Days 1 & 2

We have had a very magical experience at Disney so far! Day 1 (Saturday) was our arrival day. We spent the afternoon and evening exploring our hotel, taking advantage of the large pool and eating an African themed dinner. Yesterday (Sunday) was our first full day at the parks. We started in Magic Kingdom and arrived before the gates were open. We were excited to be able to watch the train pull into the park carrying all of the characters and some of the princesses. Because we arrived early we were able to take our time admiring Cinderella's castle on our walk in and even get quite a few photos with only a few people in the background! Eliana wore her 100% Cotton Cinderella Dress that I made her in anticipation of the heat. Despite the high of 96 degrees (unseasonably high for this time of the year) she was comfortable (well as comfortable as you can bei n 96 degrees).

Flower Girl Activity Bag - "Flower Girl Princess All Dressed In White For Most of Today and Even Tonight"...

Eliana was a flower girl in my sister's wedding a couple weeks ago.  She did a fabulous job and made it down the aisle!  That in itself is an accomplishment for a 2 year old!  In anticipation of the long day (potentially with no nap) I put together a flower girl activity bag.

DIY Backpack Purse - Sewing A Diaper Bag Purse

I am super excited about this sewing DIY!  I have been borrowing my Mom's backpack purse since Eliana was born.  I love it for so many reasons!  I finally decided that the loan time may be expired so after looking online and scouring local stores for a similar purse I decided to just try and make my own.  I am super excited with the final product!!!

Beer Boots and BBQ - The Night Before The Wedding - Menu and Decor

My sister got hitched last weekend!  Woo-hoo!  Yee-Haw!  Congratulations! Lauren and Matt are married!!!!

To welcome and thank out of town guests for traveling a distance to attend their wedding, my parents hosted an event at their home on the Friday night before the wedding.  The theme of the event was "Beer Boots and BBQ".  It was a casual event where people could arrive in their travel attire, eat dinner, and spend a little extra time together before the big day.

Princess Play Clothes - Elsa - Super Simple Queen Elsa Tank Tops

Making Queen Elsa tank tops was very simple.  Most of the project was completed by Mindi, my 9 year old cousin.  It was her first sewing project - I think she did an awesome job! We planned to make two - one for Eliana and one for Mindi so that they could have matching Elsa tops.  We ended up only finishing this one before Mindi had to head back home so we don't have any photos of them wearing them together...but hopefully we will get one the next time we have a family reunion.

Princess Play Clothes - Snow White

Princesses have play clothes too, right?  Since Eliana is completely enamored with princesses right now and requests to wear a princess dress every day I decided to make some princess play clothes for times when we are at the zoo, the playground and for our upcoming trip to Disney.  This way she can still attempt to climb, run and jump (she has never been very motor motivated - she can talk your ear off, but I am usually going down the playground slides first to show her how much fun they are and that they aren't "too dangerous", as she says)!

The outfit comes with mix and match bottoms.  A tutu skirt (above) for when feeling more "princessey" and a pair of yellow shorts (below) for when feeling more adventurous.

Sewing A Cinderella Dress - A Tutorial

This post includes the details that can turn a regular dress pattern into a Cinderella Princess Dress.  You could easily add them to almost any dress pattern in your child's size. For more detailed photos of the finished dress see this previous post.

100% Cotton Cinderella Princess Dress

The countdown to our Disney trip has begun!  In 4 weeks and 3 days we will be in Disney World!

Eliana is very much into princesses these days - one of the first things she says to me every morning is "Mommy, princess dress pleeeeease!"  For Disney I wanted something that was made of cotton so that it was breathable and comfortable in warm weather.  Most princess dresses are made of rayon so I decided to make my own so that I could choose my fabrics.

Easter Basket Ideas For A Two Year Old

Happy Easter!  The Easter Bunny treated us well this year so we thought we would share his basket ideas with everyone along with the excitement a 2 year old brings to the Easter holiday!

Of course the Easter Bunny brought us some candy filled eggs and a chocolate bunny, but he must of had some insight into how Eliana's parents would react to an entire basket filled with candy.  So, he decided to add some other exciting items to the basket without going overboard (i.e. very reasonably priced with some items even very practical).

Melted Crayon Easter Eggs - Dye Free Easter Eggs

We decorated Easter eggs last night by melting crayons!  I stumbled upon a cool new way to decorate Easter eggs by using crayons while the eggs are still hot when perusing Pinterest.  It was very simple and also not very messy.  We decorated them this way with a 9 year old (my cousin Mindi) and a 2 year old (Eliana) - both seemed to enjoy the new process and results.

Updated Art Wall And A Dr. Seuss Quote In The Playroom

Have I mentioned that we are going to Disney in a little over a month?  We are very excited and while I thought that Eliana was a little too young to appreciate the trip when we first scheduled it, she has surprised me and talks about it everyday.  She has been anticipating meeting Cinderella, Elsa and Anna, Belle and all the other princesses for the last few months and talks about our trip everyday.  She is now an expert at spotting Mickey Mouse, Nemo and Cinderella's Castle all over the city (the library, Home Depot, the grocery store, etc.)  So this is why I haven't posted in a while...I have been sewing up a storm every chance I can get making Disney Princess outfits for her to wear at Disney.  I will post on the outfits I made with tutorials a little later.

While in the playroom (which is also the location of the "sewing room") I snapped a few photos of some additions I made to the art/reading wall since my last playroom post.
